Medical technology is constantly evolving, creating new options for patients which are more efficient and more accurate.
So firstly – do you know what a mammogram is?
If you’re not sure, read our article about it. It’ll walk you through what a mammogram is, what it’s for, and how you can prepare for one.
Now that we’ve established what a mammogram is, what is a 3d mammogram and how is it different than a standard mammogram?
3d mammography is also called “breast tomosynthesis”. We explain:
“Breast Tomosynthesis uses high-powered computing to convert digital breast images into a stack of very thin layers, or “slices”, building what is essentially a 3-dimensional mammogram. The imaging machine moves around the breast in an arc, taking multiple x-rays that a computer forms into a 3D™ image of your breast tissue in one-millimeter slices. This produces the greatest visibility for the radiologist, who can scroll throughout images of your entire breast like pages of a book. Just as with a standard mammogram, compression is required for the 3D™ part of the exam.”
So essentially, a 3d mammogram can capture multiple images of your breast tissue from every angle instead of just one or two flat images
So it looks kind of like that. It covers more of your breast tissue, makes it easier for your radiologist to read, and allows for better visibility of any potential areas of concern.

So overall, this is a pretty amazing technology! Should you get one?
Yes!
3D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, has been shown in many studies to provide better, earlier more accurate breast cancer detection. There are fewer false alarms – reduced recalls by up to 40% and detects 41% more invasive breast cancer. It also provides for greater accuracy for women across a variety of breast densities.
Now…can you afford to get one?
Well, it depends on where you go to get it done. Some facilities and hospitals charge more if a patient wants to get a 3d mammogram instead of a regular one. They figure since the technology is expensive for them, they can charge the patient more.
At Derry Imaging, we think that every woman deserves access to this advanced technology. We offer our patients 3D mammography technology at all of our facilities. If you would like to get a mammogram with us, your 3d mammogram will be performed at no extra cost to you. Seriously. No strings attached. We just think that our patients deserve the best.
